Typography Evaluation

Typography Evaluation

I feel I have gained a large amount of knowledge from the typography elective that I will be able to put into practice within all my future design work. I have an understanding of simply how to make text easy to read, by the point size, leading and how many words to a line. I have also know how to make people read things the way you want them to using the hierarchy correctly, and to never underline words or centre align text unless it is a title, but most important I now know how to communicate a message more effectively with text.
I have more knowledge now in typography and feel I can confidently use this to improve my work, and understand the printing processes a lot more, which will benefit me in many areas. I feel that now type has so much personality and importance than I thought before this module and that simply changing the font can have such a big impact.
I have enjoyed exploring typographic examples and recording them in my type journal which I can use as a continuous reference, it has helped me to see what is being created in the industry and for what reason it has been created like it. I have started to begin to recognise typefaces as well which saves a lot of time and is very helpful when designing in a short space of time.
I now can confidently say I can use Quark which will benefit me within the industry. I enjoyed working and reworking packaging and fitting it altogether with crop marks for printing, this will be very helpful within any print briefs I experience.
My weaknesses I feel are the typographic terms and tabbing in Quark, which I just can’t seem to grasp although, I will continue to explore these areas and record them in my type journal for future reference.

To strengthen my type skills I will
- Continue to look and analyse existing work, which Is the best way to learn and be inspired.
- Keep my type journal updated with any interesting or bad examples of typography I come across
- Put into practice everything I have learnt in this elective and never underline text.
